Pastor Chris Okotie has been married twice in the past. His first marriage to Tina Okotie ended in divorce after 15 years. Tina moved out of Nigeria and made it clear that she had no intention of returning to Nigeria.

His second marriage to Stephanie Henshaw in 2008 created a media sensation . The mother of 3 had been previously married twice (sadly her first husband passed away while her second marriage ended in divorce). Unfortunately things came to a grinding halt in June 2012 when the Pastor announced to his congregation that the marriage was over with no chance of reconciliation.

UNIBEN Professor Isaiah Ibeh Recants his HIV/AIDS Cure Discovery | NAFDAC Warns Against Buying the Drug:

The Nigerian Professor who was widely reported to have found the cure for HIV/AIDS a few days ago has recanted his claim. In a five-paragraph statement, Professor Isaiah Ibeh, Dean, School of Basic Medical Science of University of Benin(UNIBEN) expressed regrets over the publication of his acclaimed discovery of a drug that could cure HIV/AIDS, saying that the publication was a misrepresentation of what actually transpired.

“The true position is that some observations of our Research are preliminary and the research is still ongoing. I am very sorry for the embarrassment this has caused the University of Benin and Professional Colleagues, realizing that there are procedures of reporting such Scientific result,” he said.

Authorities of the University had earlier debunked the claim made by the Professor in an official pronouncement saying the University was not carried along in the research and the Professor did not follow due process.

In another development, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control(NAFDAC) has begun a probe into Professor Ibeh’s claim that he had discovered a herbal drug capable of curing AIDS. The Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii, told Punch on Thursday that the agency had invited Ibeh to prove his claim. He warned members of the public against buying the drug because it had not been subjected to standard scientific protocols.

He said the don was wrong going public, saying it was the duty of the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, to make the announcement after tests by NAFDAC.

“The agency wishes to state that this herbal drug, which he claimed to have undergone a series of successful tests, has never been presented to NAFDAC for evaluation of efficacy and safety.”

“This bogus claim of efficacy without following the appropriate procedure for drug evaluation is capable of misleading the public, especially those that have HIV/AIDs infection as there is no known official or scientifically proven cure for HIV/AIDS infection till date,” he was quoted as saying.

“Only 34 Lions Left in Nigeria” – Lions in Nigeria & other parts of West Africa head towards Extinction! :

30 years ago, there were 200,000 lions roaming wild across the African continent but now there are only between 15,000 and 32,000 left. Of the lions left, it is a estimated that there are just 645 genetically distinct wild lions left in western and central Africa with “only 34 left in Nigeria“. That is most recent report from leading charity to protect and conserve endangered lions worldwide, LionAid as reported in the UK Daily Mail.

Dr Pieter Kat, trustee of LionAid told the UK Guardian, “There has been a catastrophic decline in the populations of lions in Africa, and particularly west Africa. These lions have been neglected for a very long time and do not have adequate protection programs.

Even though the national parks in west Africa contain very distinct and very important fauna compared to eastern Africa, people tend to ignore that west Africa is a very special place. As a result, the populations in west Africa are declining so quickly.“

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo faults Goodluck Jonathan’s Approach to Tackling Boko Haram in CNN Interview:

Nigeria’s former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, in a recent interview with CNN has said the PresidentGoodluck Jonathan administration had not been reaching out enough to the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram. He said that Jonathan should adopt a a dual-track approach, using more of dialogue rather than just cracking down on the group.

“To deal with a group like that, you need a carrot and stick. The carrot is finding out how to reach out to them. When you try to reach out to them and they are not amenable to being reached out to, you have to use the stick,” he said during the interview.

Obasanjo said President Jonathan was “just using the stick” in his efforts. “He’s doing one aspect of it well, but the other aspect must not be forgotten.”

Obasanjo told the CNN that he had tried to reach out to Boko Haram about one- year-and- a-half ago through a lawyer who was acting as the group’s proxy, and had asked if they had external backing. He said the lawyer told him that the group was receiving support from other Nigerians who have resources overseas or “other organizations from abroad”.

In response to Obasanjo’s statement, Jonathan’s spokesman, Reuben Abati, told Punch that it was surprising that the same Obasanjo who said recently that his presidency applied force when he was confronted with similar situation in Odi, Rives State, has now turned round to accuse Jonathan of applying only the stick against Boko Haram.

He said that contrary to what Obasanjo wanted the world to believe, the Federal Government’s handling of the Boko Haram menace had been purposeful and that a lot of progress had been made.

Woman Dies After Jehovah Witness’ Family Refused her Accepting Blood Transfusion | Widower to Press Charges Against Wife’s Family:

A Nigerian widower, Emmanuel Timothy, has decided to press charges against members of his wife’s family who refused to allow her get blood transfusion after loosing so much blood during surgery, eventually leading to her death.

Timothy told the News Agency of Nigeria that his deceased wife, Grace, who was a member of theJehovah Witness, died on Monday at the National Hospital, Abuja because her family refused to consent to her having a blood transfusion. She was a police corporal, assigned to the Wuse Zone 3 Police Division, Abuja.

“She lost her pregnancy at seven months, which resulted in a surgery to get the baby out. After the surgery she had complications. When she complained of serious stomach ache, we rushed her to the National Hospital where the doctor said her stomach had to be flushed. But, before the flushing, they said she needed blood transfusion because she had already lost such much blood. However, she did not get the blood transfusion because her religion and family forbid blood transfusion,” Timothy said.

Speaking on pressing charges, he said “I have to press charges because they prevented my wife from receiving blood transfusion.”

“Over our dead body. It is better she dies than for her to take another person’s blood,’’ they said to me.

Timothy was at the police station to report the wife’s death.

Her death is very sad and what makes it even more painful is that it could have been avoided. The decision to accept blood transfusion in most hospitals lies on the patient or his or her family. If there is a refusal, it is usually premised on religious or cultural reasons.

However, in some cases where the doctor knows a patient will most likely die if he or she does not accept blood transfusion, is it right to override the decision of the patient or family and give the patient blood?

The “Law has come to stay” – Senate President David Mark Insists Same-Sex Marriage Bill is Irrevocable:

Despite growing pressure from the international community and human rights activists demanding that Nigeria stop the criminalization of same sex marriage, the Senate President, David Mark has insisted the bill prohibiting same sex marriage is “irrevocable” and the “law has come to stay”.

He said in Abuja that the bill would promote “decency” in the Nigerian society. Same sex marriage will become a criminal offence in Nigeria and punishable by imprisonment of not less than 14 years if the bill is eventually signed into law.

He is quoted as saying: “We will not compromise on this. I want to invite you all to join the crusade of decency in our society. There are many good values we can copy from other societies, but certainly not this one (same sex marriage).”
“We have to prove to the rest of the world, who are advocates of this unnatural way that we Nigerians promote and respect sanity, morality and humanity. Every individual is a product of the union of a man and woman.”

The Nigerian Senate approved the bill that would make same-sex marriage punishable by 14 years imprisonment for gay couples and 10 years imprisonment for anyone abetting such unions in November 2011. According to the provisions of the bill, “Any person who … directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationships, is also liable and punishable with a 10-year sentence.”

The bill which also outlaws gay organisations has passed the second reading in the House of Representatives with a unanimous vote and will be forwarded to the President for approval after a clause-by-clause review and approval of the law by the Reps this year.
